The Climbing

Warning - Sense of Adventure required !!

The goal of this trip is to do some fine and varied alpine climbing at an advanced beginner to intermediate level and to avoid the beaten track. Therefore some previous general mountaineering experience is expected. Inquire if you are unsure of your background. Advice and assistance is available concerning your preparations. There are options on what peaks and which routes to climb.

Since the goal is to explore some of the finer climbing the trip is not organized in "peak-bagging" style with the highest points being the main goal simply because they are highest. We will attempt Chimborazo, conditions permitting. However, the planned route reaches the lowest of the four summits on the mountain. While this summit is not the highest it is reputed to have some of the finest climbing on Chimborazo if not in all of Ecuador.

Expect various climbs to involve snow/ice from 30 to 55 degrees, with short (6m, 20 ft) sections possibly up to 75 degrees or so. Also expect rock on some routes that is lower 5th class, up to 5.4 or 5.5. Not all routes will include all of these difficulties, of course, and there are options at times on the choice of route or objective.

As a guided trip you can expect all climbing to include belays wherever appropriate, the use of anchors such as snow pickets, and whatever other safety precautions are deemed necessary.
